Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas have been destroyed. Nobody knows for sure why these cells have been damaged but the most likely cause is an abnormal reaction of the body to the cells. This may be triggered by a viral or other infection.

If you are white and over 40 years old or if you're black, Asian or from a minority ethnic group and over 25 years old and have one or more of the following risk factors, you should ask your GP for a test for diabetes.

UPDATE APRIL 2020 - Over £130,000 raised so far!

There are many ways in which you could help. Of course the first way would be for an individual to be kind enough to make a small donation via this website, setting up a standing order with their bank or by sending a cheque. There are many links across the site which allow you to do all of the above. Alternatively you might decide to raise money by getting people to sponsor you in a fundraising endeavour?

Here are some of the current fundraisers that Type One Mission have been made aware of. Apologies if we have missed anyone out as we appreciate all of your support.

Type One Mission has three fantastic bands playing at Dryden Street Social in Leicester on 14th September 2018. The event named Ground Control will feature
Bad Touch, Hand of Dimes & SKAM.

Matt Parkinson raised £397.00 by swimming the Channel for Type One Mission! What an amazing endevour. Thank you Matt!

Siamo Group's employees and all its subsidiary companies (Templine, Witton, A&A, FSH, Qommunicate) raised nearly £3,000 running a £10k obstacle course.


Templine Employment Agency Limited kindly donated £10,000 again towards the Type One Mission Charity

Orwell Park in Nacton, Ipswich raised an amazing £4,650 for Type One Mission. Children completed a number of fund raising events over the course of a number of weeks and months to raise such a huge total. Many thanks to all the children, parents, teachers, governers and the headmaster for nominating TOM as one of three charities to support throughout 2015.

Gordon Elrick and his son competed in the Motoscape Banger Rally in a Mazda MX5 in September 2015. Driving across eight countries this challenge will take over five days!

Kamila Cybulska, Jan Kovak, Flo Chreseson (all from Templine) and Cian Pettitt completed the arduous Trolltunga (Trolls Tongue) Challenge in Norway. An incredible 22 kilometre trip gradually climing to the peak. They raised £421.70! How about this for a photo?

Team Templine and Witton Recruitment completed the climb up Mount Snowdon taking the total Templine Group fundraising soaring past £4,000 in total. This particular effort netted well over £600 on its own. Thanks to Flo Chreseson, Tara Slater, Ashleigh Godsell, Victoria Evans, Brogan Carter, Paul DaviesBeth Abbott and Natalie Murphy for their efforts! 

Nobby Delee completed the famous Lands End to John O'Groats cycle ride with friends. He raised a staggering £1,640 for Type One Mission

Hi-Tech Hairdressing Salon in Omagh sent a three strong team of Noleen, Sharon and Lauren to complete the Half Marathon in Moville in June 2015. They raised an amazing £611 in June 2015.

Chris Bradley and Paul Miller completed the Rat Race Dirty Weekend - over 20 miles of off course obstacle running through mud and over/under obstacles. They raised an amazing £2,500. This is what they looked like when they finished!

Rosie LongmoreJonathan Yorke and Harry Finch undertook the challenge of the Wolf Run on the 11th and 12th of April. They raised £577.50 for the charity.

Nicola Copus is completing a mammoth challenge of running six event in six months. Being a Type One diabetic since 1995 Nicki has a real passion to raise money for the charity and has already accomplished over £1,000 in his efforts! He is running: Boxing Day Dip and Run at Cromer Pier - Brrr! 17 Jan - Hellrunner down South - 10 - 12 miles of multi-terrain hell! 8 Feb - Greenwich Park - a leisurely 10k 15 Mar - Mud and Mayhem in Theford Forest - 10k of sludge!19 Apr - The Ickworth 10k - the calm before the storm! 24 May - Royal Windsor trail run - his first ever half marathon! Please support Nikki by visiting here and making a donation for his efforts

Below are examples of just SOME of the previous efforts that some people have been kind enough to make. (Note: - We are sorry if we cannot mention everyone by name. This is due to the fact that supporters have been amazingly generous and it is impossible to keep track of all the well wishers.

Dawn Sharman and fellow pupils for Year 11 at Cobden Primary School raised over £600 for Type One Mission! They were kindly supported by both Sainsbury's and Tesco that donated merchandise to help with the fund raising.

Tony Bucciero, Jason Barnes and Danielle Barnes raised over £3,500 for Type One Mission after completing the Wolf Run on the 7th September 2014. This would have been Tom's 21st birthday.

Tom Forsey raised nearly £400 completing a Snowden walk. He completed the journey whilst giving great thought to Pamela Forsey and Robert Newman - both of whom were effected by Diabetes

Oliver Dolny competed in the European Iron Man Competition on the 10th August 2014. Diagnosed as a type one diabetic in 2012 he raised nearly £800 in support of our cause

Jan Kovac with a team from Templine including friends and family raised nearly £1,000 by climbing Ben Nevis earlier this year. After conquering Scafell Pike last year the team wanted to challenge themselves again - your support for their efforts was greatly appreciated

Fiona Barnes supported three charities (TOM being one of them) and raised an amazing £585 by organising a yard sale in Birstall. Here they all are dancing to Pharrell Williams "Happy" as they raise money.


Carol Gutteridge continued her support of Type One Mission by orgainsing a stall for the Birstall Fete in 2014. She raised over £200.

James Stanley & Co are kindly donated £1 for every like they received on facebook between the 5th March and the 17th April. They raised over £400 for the charity!

Daniel Bucciero (Tom's uncle) once again arranged a bike ride to Skegness with his brother Nathan and friends and raised well in excess of £1,000.

Carol Gutteridge (Birstall Fete), Criag Chandler (Tough Mudder) and P. Clifford (Birstall Disco) raised a combined £1,600 in 2013 for the charity. Many Thanks.

Templine Employment Agency Ltd (led by Jan Kovak) arranged the Scafell Pike Challenge for the 6th July 2013. They directly raised well in excess of £500 and Templine added a further £10,000 for their efforts.

Matt Parkinson,  Callum Sexton and Jack Parker completed the Leicester to Paris Cycle ride between the 13th June and the 19th June raising hundreds of pounds. Matt Parkinson, Callum Sexton, Corey Amor and Jack Parker are followed this up by all completing a Sky Dive on the 19th August! A fantastic effort by young men that were some of Tom's closest friends.


Craig Chandler has made a double effort (raising hundreds of pounds) by undergoing the 'Tough Mudder' on the 4th May and the "Suffering" on the 22nd June. Rumours are rife that Craig must be a masochist!

Daniel Bucciero led his brother (Tom's uncles) and friends on another Leicester to Skegness bike ride for a second year running. Daniel is one the biggest and most consistent supporters of the charity since its foundation raised over four figures again. Thanks to him and to everyone that took part.

On the 3rd November 2012, Loti, Will and Griff Marshall (with a little help from their Mum and Dad!) climbed Gyrn (643 meters) in the Carneddau range to raise money for Type One Mission. They raised £377!


Nick Smith completed his second bout of fundraising for the TOM cause riding on a push bike from Lands End to John O' Groats. A total distance in excess of 1,000 miles over the best part of two weeks! Nick managed to raise well in excess of £2,000 at the last time of counting.

Gemma Ford raised £524 one behalf of TOM by undertaking an awesome challenge in Africa. Gemma climbed Mt Kenya, Meru & Kilamanjaru - in total over 11,000 meters over 14 gruelling days! 

Daniel Bucciero - raised well in excess of £2,008 alongside Tom Mcloughlin, Alun Cox, Aaron Kempin, Tony Jarram and  Nicky Fowkes on their Skegness bike ride in memory of his nephew Thomas Bucciero.

Josh Bucciero (Thomas's cousin) raised £126 on a sponsored bike ride around Bradgate Park!

Zeel Solutions -  a specialist software solution provider to the recruitment, staffing and human resource markets rasied over £2,000 on their charity golf day. Pictured below is Rav Cheema (MD of Zeel), David Smith (Zeel), Dr Lucy Walker and Tony Bucciero

 Craig and Karl Chandler raised over £800 completing the Tough Mudder challenge.

Longslade College have generously donated another big sum, this time raising £827.00 through a variety of initiatives.

St Mary's in Bucks have also generously donated £125.70, which was raised through a delicious brownie cake sale.

Leon Chandler had his long hair chopped off on the 10th March 2012 at 7pm down at the Green Tree Pub! He raised an amazing £314.50!

Donna Lennock (Thomas’s mum) and a group of close friends - Freaki Deaki, Lee Lewis, Lolly Stewart, Rattie Penney, & Chris Childs raised over £2,000 completing a parachute jump (picture of Donna below).

Erica Evans and Gemma Thwaites ran 16.7 miles around Coniston in the Lake District on 31st March 2012 to help raise over £1,000 (picture below)


On the 23rd January we gratefully banked £540 in cheques from Lenny Kelly, Craig Golby, Matthew Parkinson and Midlands Bailey Ltd. Another £219.85 in cash was deposited with donations from Gerardo Bucciero, Josh Black and Magnet.

Numerous school friends of Thomas's at Longslade College in Birstall continue to raise thousands of pounds in a series of fundraising initiatives from swimming marathons, leg waxing and citizenship fairs. Here are some of the photographs of them below.

Andy Pitt ran the half marathon on the 27th November 2011 and raised £340 through Just Giving.

Vickie Virk raised £596 walked from Abbey Park to Bradgate Park in Leicester (and back) which was near enough a half marathon. Here she is pictured with Tom's mum Donna and Tom's cousin Josh also in the picture.

Carol Gutteridge raised £472 at the Birstall Fair in August 2011

Iain Murray (Chester) - Raised £2,559.15 completing an IronMan competition (2.5 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, followed by a Marathon run of 26 miles 385 yards). Iain completed the course in 11 hours, 30 minutes and 13 seconds.

Nick Smith (Nottingham) - raised £608 by completing a Coast to Coast bicycle ride along with friends and family. Nick is pictured third left below.

Chris Bradley and Andy Smith (Darlington and Manchester) raised £695.25 on a sponsored bike ride from St Bees to Robin Hood Bay. Chris and Andy are pictured 4th and 6th below.

Donna Lennock, Alyson Taylor and Alun Romano (Leicester, Leicester and Worle) have helped to raise up to £4,000 by running the Leicester Half Marathon. Donna is pictured to the left and Alyson to the right below. Donna is Tom's mum and a founder of the charity. Details of Alun Romano's involvement can be seen by clicking here 

Many thanks also go to Riverside School, Longslade Community College and Carol Gutteridge (All Birstall, Leicestershire) where Thomas Bucciero went to school and lived all of his life. Between them they have raised in excess of £1,000.
